Tallow vs. Plant Oils: Which One Truly Nourishes the Skin?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is: “Why do you use tallow instead of just plant oils?”

It’s a fair question. The natural skincare world is full of beautiful plant-based oils — jojoba, coconut, shea, olive, castor, rosehip, argan — each with their own benefits. They’re widely used, well-loved, and they’ve earned their place in many routines.

But the foundation of my products at Lineage Natural Cosmetics will always be organic, grass-fed & finished tallow. That choice isn’t random, trendy, or nostalgic — it’s based on years of research, experience, and results. Tallow does something unique for the skin that no plant oil can replicate, and I’d love to explain why.

Why Organic, Grass-Fed & Finished Tallow is Different

When I say tallow, I don’t mean just any fat. The tallow I use is carefully sourced: organic, grass-fed & finished, from local Vancouver Island farms. That sourcing matters — because the nutrient profile of the fat is directly influenced by how the animal is raised.

Tallow is unique because:

  • It matches human biology. Its fatty acid profile is nearly identical to our own skin’s natural sebum, which means the skin recognizes it and absorbs it with ease.

  • It’s nutrient dense. Tallow is naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, delivered in forms that the skin can actually use.

  • It repairs the skin barrier. Where many oils sit on the surface, tallow helps restore and strengthen the lipid layer of the skin, addressing dryness, irritation, and sensitivity at the root.

This is why people who try tallow often describe it as feeling like their skin has finally “found what it was missing.”

The Value of Plant Oils

I also work with plant-based oils — and I value them. Each one brings its own strengths, and when combined with tallow, they create a well-rounded formula. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Jojoba oil → One of the closest plant oils to our skin’s natural sebum. Balances oil production, making it excellent for both dry and oily skin types.

  • Coconut oil → Known for its antimicrobial properties. Works well in body care products and helps soothe rough, dry patches.

  • Shea butter → A deeply emollient butter that calms irritation and provides long-lasting moisture.

  • Olive oil → Rich in antioxidants and fatty acids. It supports skin elasticity, calms inflammation, and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

  • Castor oil → Thick and protective, it helps draw out impurities while also sealing in moisture. Often used in cleansing formulations because of its ability to gently lift dirt and oil from the skin.

  • Argan oil → Lightweight and rich in vitamin E. Improves skin elasticity, smooths fine lines, and adds a subtle radiance.

  • Rosehip oil → High in antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Supports skin regeneration and helps even tone, making it a favorite for mature or scar-prone skin.

These oils are wonderful and play important roles in natural skincare. But none of them mimic the structure of human skin quite like tallow does — which is why tallow forms the base of my formulations.

My Formulation Philosophy

This is why, at Lineage, I don’t choose between tallow and plants — I combine them.

Every product begins with an organic, grass-fed & finished tallow base, because that’s what gives the skin true compatibility and barrier repair. From there, I layer in carefully selected plant oils and botanicals to add specific benefits — whether that’s calming, balancing, or brightening.

The result is skincare that’s both ancestral and modern: rooted in traditional wisdom, supported by nutritional science, and elevated by clean formulation practices.

The Bottom Line

So, tallow vs. plant oils — which one wins?

If you’re looking for a moisturizer that the skin recognizes as its own, that can deliver essential nutrients and restore barrier function, the answer is organic, grass-fed & finished tallow.

When blended with plant oils like jojoba, coconut, shea, olive, castor, argan, and rosehip, it becomes more than a moisturizer — it becomes a complete, whole-food skincare solution.

That’s why I chose tallow as the heart of my formulations, and why I trust it not only for myself, but for my family, and for every jar I create for you.

✨ Every product I make is crafted with organic, grass-fed & finished tallow sourced locally from Vancouver Island, paired with plant oils for balance and effectiveness. It’s skincare that respects both tradition and science — and it’s made to truly serve your skin.
